History

Finds indicate a prehistoric settlement. Smaller Iron Age settlements existed here during the Castro culture. From Roman times parts have been preserved Roman roads running here.

The present town developed only in the course of consolidating the independent kingdom of Portugal (from 1140 ). The place was known as Ulveira, with the addition of de Frades (Portuguese for: the monks ), probably because the area since 1123 belonged to the monastery of Santa Cruz in Coimbra. It is also a connection with the monastery Lafões on the other side of the watercourse. In 1169 Portugal's first king D.Afonso Henriques confirmed the ownership of the area Ulveira the Santa Cruz Monastery, which is considered the first official documentation of the place. From the former Ulveira was in the course of time today Oliveira, while the addition was maintained.

The current county Oliveira de Frades arose in the course of administrative reform by the Liberal Revolution in 1822 in 1834, when the county Lafões dissolved and was split into the districts of São Pedro do Sul, Vouzela and Oliveira de Frades. After short-term resolution 1836 1837 Queen D.Maria II confirmed the existing circle until today.

Culture and sights

Among the monuments of Oliveira de Frades include various religious buildings, historic homes and public buildings. The historical town center as a whole is a listed building.

The Ponte Luís Bandeira over the Rio Vouga was at the beginning of the 20th century, the first concrete bridge in Portugal. It also offers a remarkable view over the landscape of verdant riverside.

With the de Anta pintada Antelas and Anta da Arca two megalithic sites can be visited.

Sports

The sports club Grupo Desportivo de Oliveira De Frades founded in 1945, also operates a Tennischule addition to his various football and futsal divisions. The first football team of the club to pay its home games in the 2,500 -seat Parque Desportivo De Oliveira De Frades. After a few seasons in the 4th Portuguese league (III ª Divisão ) the club was after the season 2012/ 2013 barely avoid a re- descent into the highest regional league of the Association in the District of Viseu ( Campeonato Distrital ).

Oliveira de Frades is the seat of the homonymous district. The county, in turn, is one of the few that are divided into two areas: the main area in which the municipality is located Oliveira de Frades, and an exclave is a smaller area, a few kilometers to the southeast.

The neighboring districts of the main area are (clockwise starting from the north ): São Pedro do Sul, Vouzela, Agueda, Sever do Vouga and Vale de Cambra. The smaller area has the neighboring districts Vouzela, Tondela and Agueda.
