Oliver Campbell

Oliver Samuel Campbell ( born February 25, 1871 in New York City; † July 11, 1953 in Campbellton, Canada) was an American tennis player.

Career

Campbell took part from 1886 to the American Tennis Championships (now the U.S. Open ). From 1890 to 1892 he won there three times the title in the men's singles. On his first victory he was just 19 years old; This record held exactly 100 years to Pete Sampras in 1990 replaced him as the youngest winner. In men's doubles, he was a total of three times (1888, 1891, 1892) successfully. Campbell had begun as a baseline player, turned his game but one of the first American player to serve and volley on.

In 1892 he participated in a single time at the Wimbledon Championships. In some he left in the second round against Arthur Gore, in a double he was on the side of George Whiteside Hillyard reach the semifinals.

Most recently, he volunteered in 1893 to the American championships, but did not start. He then ended his tennis career.

He died in 1953 at the age of 82 years in Canada. 1955 was admitted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
