Oliver J. Flanagan

Oliver J. Flanagan ( May 22nd, 1920 in Mountmellick, County Laois, † 26 April 1987) was an Irish politician of the Fine Gael.

Biography

After schooling Flanagan was a carpenter and later worked as an auctioneer.

His political career began in 1943 with the first election for deputies ( Teachta Dala ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ). There he represented initially until 1948, the interests of the Monetary Reform Party in the constituency Leix - Offaly. Subsequently, he was until 1954 an independent Member of this constituency before he then joined the Fine Gael. This eventually he represented until 1987 continued in the 1961 renamed Laoighis - Offaly constituency Leix - Offaly.

After joining the Fine Gael Prime Minister appointed him ( Taoiseach ) John A. Costello June 1954 to March 1957 the Parliamentary Secretary of the Minister of Agriculture. In the cabinet of Liam Cosgrave Barrett was initially from September 1975 to December 1976 Parliamentary Secretary of the Minister of Defense. As part of a cabinet reshuffle took place on December 2, 1976, he was appointed Minister of Defense. This office he held until the end of Cosgrave term of office on 25 May 1977.

1987, a few weeks before his death, he gave up a run again for the House of Commons. Instead, his son Charles Flanagan was elected MPs in the constituency Laoighis - Offaly.
