Oliver Jones (pianist)

Oliver Theophilus Jones ( born September 11, 1934 in Montreal ) is a Canadian jazz pianist and composer.

Life and work

Oliver Jones took piano lessons from the age of five years, first at Madame Bonner of the Église Unie in the district of " Petite Bourgogne ( Saint -Henri ) ," which was made famous by Trevor Payne's Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir. He received further going lessons with Oscar Peterson's sister Daisy ( Peterson ) Sweeney.

According to local performances, he toured the United States with a band called "Band Wagon". From 1980 he worked among others as the house pianist in " Charlie Biddle's Jazz Club" of Montreal ( 1981-1986 ), where he among other things, occurred with Biddle and drummer Bernard Primeau. At the same time he appeared in Canada, but also in Europe, at festivals, in concerts and in clubs, either as a solo artist or with a trio.

In 1986 he won a Juno Award for his album Lights of Burgundy and 1989 the " Félix Award" for his album Just Friends. The multiple honorary doctorates excellent pianist taught music at the Laurentian University of Ontario (1987 ) and McGill University in Montreal (1988).
