Olof Swartz

Olof Peter Swartz ( born September 21, 1760 Norrköping, † September 19, 1818 in Stockholm) was a Swedish botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Sw. ".

Swartz earned his doctorate in 1781 at the age of 21 years at the University of Uppsala. From 1783 to 1787 he toured the West Indies and North America to collect plants. In 1788 he traveled to England. He then worked as a professor in Stockholm. One focus of his work were the spore plants. The plant genus Swartzia is named after him.

From 1808, he was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. 1811-1818 he was Permanent Secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
