Olomoucké syrečky

The Olomouc curd cheese (Czech: Tvarůžek Olomouc, Olomouc or syreček - but more commonly, as a plural: Olomoucké tvarůžky, also olomoucké syrečky ) is a sour milk cheese with a washed rind, which was allegedly made ​​in the 15th century in the area around the Moravian city of Olomouc and as the only original Czech cheese applies.

Quargel is made from cow's milk and matures in 24 to 26 hours. It has a slightly sour spicy to rich flavor and a distinctive odor, which is related to the German Limburger cheese. He is not particularly durable. Olomouc curd cheese is sometimes confused with the common gray cheese.

Original Olomouc and Saxon or Austrian Tvarůžky Cheese have been known for centuries and were in the 20th century also under the Czech name known where they are prepared today in Loštice in Okres Šumperk. In Germany and Austria Tvarůžky Cheese are still made under the appellation Olomouc Tvarůžky Cheese by some dairies.

Since 4 August 2010, Olomouc curd cheese is a protected by the EU concept of origin and may be used from August 2015 only for the cheese produced in the Czech Republic.

Olomouc curd cheese is mentioned in the hit Ironically bananas from the 1920s and there had probably his most significant appearance in the popular culture.
