History

In the times of the Teutonic Order this area was of great strategic importance. From lying on the opposite side of the castle, the island was first connected by a bridge and down in 1417 by a ferry. Bleihof at the time was still not an island. The island was only after the establishment of the Kiel Canal in the year 1576th owes its name to the lead Bleihof camps, which were located here.

The eastern part Bleihofs belonged to the harbor bridge. At this point, large carpentry workshops and a repair yard, from which the Crusaders were made use of. Nearby is a peculiar water barrier was in the form of a long chain or a rod that closed the Motława. Apparently, this barrier was still working in 1809.

In the late sixties of the nineteenth century, a sewage pumping station was built in the old carpentry that still exists today and is fully functional. With it, there appeared the first high chimney and steam engines.

Municipal electricity plant

In the years 1897-1898 a municipal power station was built on Bleihof by the Berlin firm Siemens & Halske.

According to the original plans, the E-Werk Bleihof should supply the lighting of the streets in Gdansk and long vehicle with electricity. Initially, the gas lighting of today Siegesallee ( Aleja Zwycięstwa ) was replaced. In 1907, the ground network was no longer than 170 km. It was only the beginning of the Danzig power supply network.

In the last months of World War II, the company has suffered massive war damage. Was destroyed not only the impressive Motława facade and the large industrial chimney, but also the ceiling of the Elektrizitätzwerks. Damage to the system was quickly eliminated, so that again the electricity production was resumed in August 1945.
