Olympic Broadcasting Services

Olympic Broadcasting Services ( OBS) is a company that was founded in May 2001 by the International Olympic Committee and is responsible for the international coverage of the Olympic Games.

Tasks of the OBS

The main task of OBS is to produce international TV and radio signal ( ITVR ) and forward them to broadcasters around the world. Thus, the signal of the national broadcasters can be used equally, it is necessary to generate as neutral and not directed at certain players or nations images, which is why the signal contains no comments or interviews. Thus, the stations have the ability to align with their own comments and interviews, the reporting by the interests of their audience. A further object of the SOM is to represent the national broadcasters premises and any required technology. The premises are located mostly in the International Broadcast Centre ( IBC). Here, the international director is also housed. The OBS has a staff of 85 people from 21 different countries (as of December 2008). Many of these employees were taken over by Beijing Olympic Broadcasting. The seat of SOM Center is Madrid.

Beijing Olympic Broadcasting

The work of the OBS began with the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. For this was 2004 Beijing Olympic Broadcasting (BOB ), founded a joint venture between OBS and the Beijing Organizing Committee. BOB was responsible for the provision of the photographic material under the direction of the OBS. The images were forwarded under the direction of Manolo Romero at a total of 200 national channels. Built by BOB International Broadcast Centre, where there were nearly all television studios, comprised of about 80,000 m².

Olympic Broadcasting Services Vancouver

The 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver were the first games in which OBS was the sole producer of the photographic material. For this purpose OBS founded in December 2006 Olympic Broadcasting Services Vancouver ( OBSV ). This sub-organization under the direction of Nancy Lee and Manolo Romero was responsible for the production of the images, but also for the construction and maintenance of the International Broadcast Centre Vancouver. This was about 20,000 square meters and workplace for approximately 4,000 people.

Olympic Broadcasting Services London

The production of images of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London is Olympic Broadcasting Services London ( OBSL ), another OBS sub-organization take over. These related OBSL in August 2009 an office building near the London Olympic Park to start planning the Games. The OBSL is headed by the former Chief Technical Officer of the BBC Paul Mason.

Broadcast Training Program

Since the 2010 Olympic Games OBS organized in advance of the Games a training program for students from the fields of media and broadcasting. The goal is that the participants in collaboration with professional experienced staff to gain practical experience and give them as a good transition in media professions is possible. For this purpose a year conducted workshops for the various areas before the Games begin about. The areas of responsibility include:

  • Assistant sound (audio assistant)
  • Finance Administration ( Finance Assistant )
  • Assistant camera (Camera Assistant)
  • Electronic reporting ( ENG Assistant)
  • Video editing (video logger)
  • Production (production assistant)

Particularly successful students have then the chance to be taken over by the OBS and used during the games. So, 2010 could be successfully trained nearly 600 students from OBSV.
