Camera variants

  • M -1: This camera had all the features of OM1, just not the name. Since Leica cameras had also named M in the range and it was feared confusion, the name was changed to OM 1
  • OM -1: It has changed only the name, otherwise identical to the M 1.
  • OM- 1 MD: This camera had a built-in motor connection. Each normal OM- 1 could be upgraded to an OM- 1 MD.
  • OM -1n: The latest version of the OM -1: the motor connection was installed at each camera delivered, as a further novelty flash ready indicator in viewfinder has been integrated. Therefore, the OM -1n was equipped with the same hot shoe like the OM -2n ( Shoe 4 ). However, only two of the three existing contacts for the operation are needed.

Special

The OM- 1 is different in handling some cases considerably by cameras from other manufacturers, although they look very similar to them. The most striking difference is that the camera has no shutter speed dial. Instead of Zeitenrads the wheel for the film speed can be found on top of the camera, the times are set at the time on the bayonet ring. Thus, it is possible to control with just one hand aperture, distance and time, without having to remove the camera from the eye. In order to prevent a confusion of time ring and aperture ring on the lens, Olympus moved in almost all fixed focal length the aperture ring on the front barrel of the lens. The only exception with the lenses in the Systemeinfürung was the zoom lens 75 -150mm. Instead of the then customary for the film rewind release button of the camera, Olympus realized a rotary knob on the front of the camera below the film speed wheel. The OM -1 (as well as all other OM cameras) has no preview button. Olympus built this feature into the lenses, while other manufacturers integrated this feature into the camera.
