Omaheke
Omaheke is one of the 14 regions of Namibia and the ancestral homeland of the Herero. Omaheke has an area of 84731.9 square kilometers (slightly larger than Austria ) with a population of 67 496 inhabitants.
Geography
The geography of Omaheke, also called " Sandveld " ( rarely also Ostnamiba or Texas from Namibia called ), is a steppe characterized by the foothills of the Kalahari desert and essentially covers a huge area of more than 80,000 square kilometers. Grass savannah, acacia bushes and camel thorn trees dominate the picture.
History
During the uprising of the Herero in what was then German South-West Africa in 1904 defeated the Herero attempted after the Battle of Waterberg, in this case their planned and coordinated with the British protectorate of Bechuanaland after withdrawal by the Omaheke to perform today's Botswana. The German colonial power instructed its troops nachzusetzen the fugitives and they " [ ... ] over again from event. to chase found there water bodies [ ... ]. " A lot of the refugees died of thirst in the Omaheke. The actions of the German colonial power is considered by scientists as the first genocide of the 20th century. Those who crossed the finish line, returned to the announcement of the abolition of the so-called destruction command back to their tribal lands back.
Management
Capital of the region is Gobabis; the region is managed in seven constituencies:
- Aminuis with 12,343 inhabitants
- Epukiro
- Kalahari with 9,234 inhabitants
- Gobabis with 14,278 inhabitants
- Otjinene with 14,932 inhabitants
- Otjombinde with 6,378 inhabitants and
- Steinhausen with 9,066 inhabitants.
Economy
The majority of the land is used by around 800 large farms that operate here, especially cattle.
