Omanhene

Omanhene is at different Akanvölkern Ghana's the title of a supreme traditional ruler ( " king " ) of a region or major city.

The Anglo-Saxon translation of the title Omanhene is Paramount Chief ( " Supreme Regent "). He is the central figure and institution of a nation. Although he now has no official function in the state of Ghana, but has significant public authority. The Omanhene is also distributed a large landowner and the center of a feudal system of land to " caretakers ".

A Omanhene is determined by the Queen mother, the king's mother. Thus, the succession is proceeding according to matriarchal principles. An exception hereof only the Omanhene of Elmina (see story Elminas )

Not all Akanvölkern the Omanhene is the supreme ruler. To recognize the Ashanti, for example, as the supreme traditional ruler of the Asantehene, the locally Omanhene are subordinate.

The word ' HeNe " finds itself as a term for " ruler " in other titles of the peoples of Ghana again. So the ruler of the Dagomba Northern Ghana that do not belong to the Akanvölkern, the Dagombahene etc.
