Omar Al-Mukhtar University

The Umar al- Mukhtar University (Arabic:. جامعة عمر المختار; engl Omar al - Mukhtar University), formerly known as Muhammad bin Ali al - Sanusi University, is a public university in the city of al - Baida, the third largest city in Libya. It is the second largest university in Libya and the first Islamic University in the country.

It is named after Umar al - Mukhtar (1862-1931), the Quran teacher and freedom fighter against Italian colonial rule named.

Its origins go back to 1961, when it was founded under the name of Mohammed bin Ali al - Sanusi University after the founder of the Order Sanusiya Muhammad al- Sanusi ( 1787-1859 ).

After achieving independence in the 1980s, they changed its name to its present.

Several of its faculties are located in the cities of al - Quba, Derna and Tobruk.
