Omolon (rural locality)

Omolon (Russian Омолон ) is a village ( selo ) in the Autonomous District of the Chukchi (Russia) with 873 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The village is located about 800 km as the crow flies west of the county government center Anadyr on the right bank of the Kolyma - Omolon Creek, which here marks the boundary of Magadan Oblast. In Omolon was measured in the Autonomous District -61 ° C, the lowest temperature so far.

Omolon is part of Rajon Bilibinski and is located some 400 km south-west of the administrative center Bilibino. It is the only town in the same rural community ( selskoje posselenije ).

History

The place was built in 1944 in connection with the construction of an airfield on the flight route, over the aircraft from the United States were transferred to the Soviet Union during the Second World War as part of the Lend-Lease Agreement. It was named after the river, whose name is jukagirischen origin and means about good flow.

Today, over 80 % of the inhabitants are members of indigenous peoples of the Russian North, mainly Evens, who deal with reindeer herding, fishing and fur hunting.

Traffic

Omolon has no year-round passable dry land connection, but can be reached via a winter road from Bilibino. The construction of a road to Anadyr with turnoff to Bilibino is planned. At the northeastern outskirts is the airport Omolon ( ICAO code UHMN ), via the connection to Anadyr, Magadan and Bilibino ( Keperwejem ) exists.
