Onagawa (Miyagi)

Onagawa (Japanese女 川 町, -chō ) is a town in the district of the Japanese prefecture of Miyagi Oshika.

The city for the Onagawa nuclear power plant, which is partially located in neighboring Ishinomaki is known.

Geography

Onagawa is located at the northern end of the Oshika Peninsula eastward along the Sanriku Riasküste at the Onagawa Bay (女 川 湾, - wan). In front are the two inhabited islands Enoshima (江 岛; 0.36 km ²) and Izushima (出 岛; 2.68 km ²). The entire coast is part of Minamisanriku- Kinkazan quasi - national park. The inhabited areas are limited to smaller coastal sections and the valleys of the Kitakami mountain country, so that the largest part of the municipality is forested. East of the town is the 7.2 km ² lake Mangokuura (万 石浦). Through the city flows the eponymous Onagawa ( " Woman River ").

Except the coast Onagawa is enclosed by the city of Ishinomaki, which was created from the union of the surrounding communities in 2005. Since then Onagawa is also the only town in the district Oshika.

History

Onagawa was appointed on 1 April 1889 the village community ( mura ). On April 1, 1926, the scale-up was carried out to the small town ( chō ).

When Tohoku Earthquake of 11 March 2011 and the subsequent tsunami, the fishing port had a height of 14.8 m, a large part of the urban area was destroyed, including 12 of the 25 tsunami shelters (all in places over 6 m in height ). As of May 20 473 dead and 620 missing persons were counted.

Traffic

The place is connected to the rail network with JR East Ishinomaki Line, which starts from Kogata in Misato and ends in Onagawa. The city has two railway stations: Urashuku and Onagawa.

Most important trunk road is the National Road 398 according to Ishinomaki or Yurihonjo.

Go from the harbor ferries Izushima to Enoshima and managed to Ishinomaki island Kinkasan.

Education

In Onagawa, there are three primary schools, two secondary schools and a prefectural high school.
