Oncostatin-M

Oncostatin- M ( OSM) is a protein produced by activated leukocytes in mammals. Is a cytokine that is a part of the signal cascade for the control of hematopoiesis. OSM also involved in the inflammatory response. It is able to influence the sprouting of several cancer cell lines, positive or negative.

OSM is produced in the bone marrow, and the lymphatic system as a direct response to IL- 2, IL -3 and EPO. It exerts its effects, in turn, to OSM receptors, of which there are two types. OSM stimulates the growth of endothelial cells as well as their production of plasminogen activator, G-CSF, GM-CSF, P-selectin and IL-6. OSM, IL-6 belongs to the sub- family of cytokines.
