Province

Ondjiva (also N'jiva and Onjiva written; colonial times Pereira d' Eca ) is a city in southwestern Angola and the capital of the province of Cunene. Their population is estimated at about 10,000, making it one of the smallest provincial capitals of Angola. The city is located about 950 km south of Luanda and about 50 km north of the border with Namibia. The nearest major town is in Lubango about 200 km away.

The city Ondjiva is small and manageable for a provincial capital. In addition to various non-governmental organizations there are mainly the provincial government, and some trading and transport company based. Moreover Ondjiva seat of the diocese Ondjiva.

The population is in the city and the surrounding region mainly the Ovambo people in, mostly the subgroup of Kwanyama. By 1917 Ondjiva was the residence of Uukwanyama kings.

Due to a temporarily very poor road connections north over Lubango addition, the economy is strongly oriented towards the nearby Namibia. There is a road that was in 2004 in a passable condition for Angolan relations, and is currently being expanded. For the future, the construction of a railway from Namibia on Ondjiva is scheduled to Lubango. On the Namibian side the track is already finished up to the border crossing Oshikango.

The city has an airport which is serviced, including the Air Namibia.
