One Tambon One Product

One Tambon One Product ( OTOP, Thai: โอ ทอ ป - A community, a product ) is a program for the promotion of private enterprise, which was founded during his reign from 2001 to 2006 from the former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The program aims in each Tambon ( Thai administrative unit, such as " community " ) to promote a unique product to market, both across the country and internationally.

Thaksin's idea comes from Japan's successful "One- Village -One - Product " movement ( OVOP ) as well as in the Philippines and Taiwan - " One Town, One Product " ( OTOP ). Just as there the village community will be asked to choose a specific product per village, whose quality and marketing is then improved specifically. This product is then made known to the Thai market through the OTOP organization.

OTOP utilizes a variety of local products such as handicrafts, textiles and clothing made of cotton and silk, pottery, fashion accessories, household items, cosmetics, furniture made of rattan and bamboo, as well as food.

After the military coup of 2006, the OTOP program was initially abandoned, but then resumed later.

There are all over the country about 36,000 OTOP groups, each with 30-3000 members. Sakda Siridechakul, president of the OTOP Association of Chiang Mai, said in an interview: " OTOP has contributed to the income of many people has risen in the villages. There is a small local manufacturers, the feeling of being part of the global economy. "
