Onie Wheeler

Onie Wheeler ( born November 10, 1921 in Senath, Missouri; † 26 May 1984) was an American country and rockabilly singer whose career began in the 1940s and in the 1970s had several hits.

Life

As a child, Onie Wheeler learned to play guitar and harmonica. During the Second World War he served in the army. After his release in 1945 he began to devote himself to his professional music career. With Ernest Thompson, A. J. Nelson and his brother Doyle he founded the Ozark Cowboys. With his band Wheeler entered the honky tonks and bars Texas ' on. In 1952, he met with the country singer Little Jimmy Dickens, who persuaded him to visit to Nashville, Tennessee.

Career

There were Wheeler and his band a record deal with the Columbia Records. Even though his singles were not successful, Lefty Frizzell was with Wheeler's song Run ' Em Off a hit. Mid-1950s, he turned to the popular rockabilly. With Onie 's Bop he was in June 1956 at Columbia's five top-selling country artists. A year later, Wheeler signed with Sun Records in Memphis. There he was given the opportunity with stars such as Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins to occur. His first tour with Cash and Perkins also belonged to the young pianist Jerry Lee Lewis. After a short stay in California Wheeler returned to Nashville, and during the 1960s, among others, the Epic Records, the Starday Records and United Artists released several singles. He also went with George Jones and Roy Acuff on tour.

In 1973, he finished with John 's Been Shucking My Corn for the first time a leading position on the Billboard country charts. His daughter, Karen was able to assert itself as a musician. He operational since the late 1970s, a guitar repair shop and only appeared occasionally along with Roy Acuff at the Grand Ole Opry.

Onie Wheeler died on 26 May 1984 at the age of 63 during a performance with Jimmie Snow on the stage of the Opry.
