Onno Klopp

Onno Klopp ( born October 9, 1822 in Leer / Ostfriesland; † August 9, 1903 in Vienna) (pseudonym: J. Vota ) was a German -Austrian journalist and historian.

Life and work

Klopp was the fifth of twelve children of businessman and co-owner Bünting Weert Klopp (1791-1833) and his wife Henriette Verford ( 1796-1885 ). After his school education in Leer and Emden Klopp studied from 1841 to 1845 in Bonn, Berlin and Göttingen, the subjects Philology, Evangelical theology, history and philosophy. In Bonn he joined the Corps Guestphalia. In Göttingen, he was in 1845 the examinations for the Higher Teacher Training; doctorate in Jena took place in his absence. Klopp went as a teacher at the Ratsgymnasium Osnabrück, where he taught until the summer of 1858 and during this time was as a journalist - a writer. During the March 1848 revolution Klopp supported nor the Democrats, but he reversed this position in the following time basically. In 1852 he began work on a " East Frisian history ," which until 1858 was published in three volumes in 1854.

1858 Klopp came to Hanover. Due to its anti-Prussian attitude he fell to King George V in 1861 and entrusted with the edition of the political science work of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. 1865 Klopp was appointed Archives speakers for the Hanoverian State Archives. The following year, he assisted King George V as a secretary and courier in the war against Prussia. After 1871 - now living in Vienna and since 1872 an Austrian citizen - Onno Klopp intensified his historical and literary work.

For six years, from 1876 to 1882, he taught there, the Crown Prince Franz Ferdinand in history. Its transcripts were published posthumously in 1912 under the title " Political History of Europe".

Klopp true today as the last " Haushistoriograph " the Guelph in Hanover. In his numerous journalistic work, he sharply criticized the Prussian policy and in particular to the " small German historical builders ," those mostly Prussian historians such as Heinrich von Sybel or Ludwig Hausser, who propagated a small German view of history in advance of the German Empire in their works. Although undoubtedly Klopp's historical works met the methodological criteria of historical research, he came by in a role as an outsider, which naturally was multiplied when the Kingdom of Hanover was annexed in 1866 after the " German War" of Prussia. This changed after his flight to Vienna not know where now in very strong terms, he represented an outdated by the political developments large German Catholic view of history after his conversion to Catholicism in 1873.

According to him, Onno Klopp - Alley is since 1904 in Vienna Penzing ( 14th district ) named, also a road in his home town of Leer, the Onno Klopp - Street.
