ÅŒnokuni Yasushi

Ōnokuni Yasushi (Japanese大 乃 国 康, prop, Yasushi Aoki (青木 康), born October 9, 1962 in Memuro, Hokkaido Prefecture) is a former Japanese sumo wrestler. He was the 62nd Yokozuna.

Ōnokuni, who had a very extensive physique even for a sumo wrestler and later in his career weighed over 200 kg, was introduced in March 1978 as a wrestler of Hanaregoma - heya. In 1982, he managed to move up to the juryo Division. Already after five tournaments he debuted in the sanyaku ranks and after two more years of success with a total of seven special prices (5x Shukun -Sho, 2x Kanto -sho ) he was promoted to ozeki in 1985. During this time also established the competition to Hokutoumi, where Ōnokuni mostly just the " second fiddle " played. After a period of rather mediocre performance of "Panda" won then in May 1987 surprisingly his first tournament victory - with 15 wins and unbeaten ( zensho - Yusho ). Although the good results in the next two tournaments were not enough to another tournament victory, enough for the Sumōverband but to appoint him as Yokozuna.

The following year, 1988 Ōnokuni won against his opponent Hokutoumi in the jump victory in the March tournament. This second tournament victory should be his last. Ōnokuni could not maintain its level of performance and suffered in 1989 even a make- koshi. He retired in early 1990 in the fight against Chiyonofuji a broken ankle with torn ligaments and had to pause four tournaments. Although he came to after quite successful three times, then still had to explain but in 1991 his resignation. He was initially Oyakata in Ringer stable Hanaregoma - Beya, but then founded his own stable Shibatayama - Beya.
