Onsen District, Ehime

Onsen (温泉 郡jap, Onsen -gun, German: "County of hot spring " ) is a former county ( Gun) in Ehime Prefecture in Japan.

On 1 January 2005 the district was disbanded as part of a community pooling. The population in 2003 was in the former cities Shigenobu, Kawauchi and Nakajima together 40,690, area 248.73 km ².

The county Onsen was centrally located in what is now the city of Matsuyama and was in Japanese antiquity until the end of the Heian period, under the name Yu no Kori (汤 郡, dt "County of hot water " ) known. In fact, the district owes its name to a famous hot spring, called Dōgo Onsen. This is also the oldest thermal baths of Japan ( see also: Matsuyama ).
