Onslow Stearns

Onslow Stearns ( born August 30, 1810 in Billerica, Massachusetts, † December 29, 1878 in Concord, New Hampshire ) was an American politician and 1869-1871 Governor of the State of New Hampshire.

Early years and political rise

Stearns attended the local schools of his home. Since 1830, he worked in the railroad business. Initially he was contractor for the construction of the railway, later he was on the board of several railway companies. Politically, he was active until 1862. As a member of the Republican Party, he was elected this year to the Senate from New Hampshire. This mandate he retained until 1864, where he was president of that body since 1863. In the Senate he was a member of various committees that dealt with the railways, military affairs and elections. In 1864 he was a delegate to the national convention of his party, where Abraham Lincoln was re-nominated as presidential candidate. In 1867, he applied first to the office of governor, but failed within his party to Walter Harriman. In 1869 he was elected as a candidate but then his party in this office.

Governor of New Hampshire

Onslow Stearns took up his new post on June 3, 1869. After a re-election in 1870 he was able to stay in this position until June 8, 1871. During his tenure, an Agriculture Committee was established. He succeeded in further reducing the national debt. He strengthened the industry and trade in his country in order to create new jobs, and lowered some taxes. During this time, the 15th Amendment to the Constitution was enacted. On the issue of women's suffrage, the governor was set reserved and somewhat disagree. The same was true for a proposal of the supporters of prohibition, who proposed the establishment of a comprehensive state police. This proposal was rejected.

After the end of his term as Governor Stearns again devoted his private business activities, including in particular the rail business was. He died in December 1878 and was buried in Concord. With his wife Mary Abbot Holbrook Onslow Stearns had seven children.
