Ontario Hockey League

The Ontario Hockey League ( OHL short ) is one of Canada's three top junior leagues which constitute the Canadian Hockey League.

Organization

In addition to the Ontario Hockey League exist in the Canadian Hockey League, the WHL and the LHJMQ. In the OHL, only players 15 to 20 years are allowed to play. However, each team has the opportunity to use three players who are already at the season opener 20 years old. These are called " Overage " Junior called. Most of the teams are from Ontario, Canada, but some also come from Michigan or Pennsylvania.

The All -Star Game was held in 2007 in Saginaw, Michigan. That was the first time that an OHL All-Star Game was held in the United States. The OHL was created in 1980 from the Ontario Major Junior seamlessly Hockey League ( OMJHL ), which already existed under other than OHA junior hockey since 1896.

Awards

The point best team after the regular season receives the Hamilton Spectator Trophy. Also, for each group winner there is a Trophy. These are in detail the Leyden Trophy ( East Division ), the Emms Trophy ( Central Division ), the Holody Trophy ( Midwest Division ) and the Bumbacco Trophy ( West Division ).

Then the master of the OHL is determined in a playoff round. The team that qualifies as a representative of the Eastern Conference Finals for, receives the Bobby Orr Trophy, the representative of the Western Conference is awarded the Wayne Gretzky Trophy. The winner of the final series gets the J. Ross Robertson Cup.

Also for the players there after the season of awards, such as the Red Tilson Trophy for the most valuable player in the league, the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy for the most points player of the regular season or the Emms Family Award for the Rookie of the Year.

Priority Selection

The Priority Selection was hosted for the first time before the season 1974/75 by the OMJHL. The teams in the Ontario Hockey League select players from the ages of 16 and 17 years who come from the province of Ontario and the U.S. states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York and others. Due to exceptions, it is possible that an 15 -year-old "outstanding " player can be selected. This was the first time in 2005, when John Tavares was admitted to the event. Another 15 -year-old that were previously selected in 2011 were Aaron Ekblad, 2012 Connor McDavid and 2013 Sean Day.

By 2001 the Priority Selection was held in a public place. In 2001, the Ontario Hockey League has decided to align the draft via the Internet, so as to take the pressure and lots of attention from the young players.

The first selected players will be awarded the Jack Ferguson Award.
