Onufri

Onufri was an Orthodox priest and one of the greatest icon painters of the 16th century in Southeastern Europe. He was probably of Albanian origin. Testimonies of his work have survived, especially in central and southern Albania. About the artist's life little more than his name and the dates of some of his work has survived. Since 1547 worked for several years in Berat and after 1555 in Shelcan near Elbasan. Furthermore, it is known that he founded his own art school and workshop, which was continued by his son Nikolla.

At the castle of Berat, the city for their churches Onufri particularly large number of icons and frescoes created, there is a museum where his pictures were exhibited.
