The Oodnadatta Track is an unpaved Outbackpiste in the north of the Australian state of South Australia. It connects the Birdsville Track in Marree Oodnadatta via the Stuart Highway at Marla. It runs a few miles along the Lake Eyre South.

History

This route is a traditional trade route of the indigenous tribes along which there are a number of sources, which are supplied from the Great Artesian Basin. The best preserved example of this is Mound Springs near Coward Springs. The course of the trade route followed the explorer John McDouall Stuart on his third expedition in 1859 to Darwin. Later this route - because of the availability of water - for the Overland Telegraph Line ( OTL ) and the Central Australian Railway chosen as the original route of the Ghans. Even today there are many remains of railway tracks and telegraph stations along the route, one of the best preserved ruins in the Coward Springs Siding.

Course

The Oodnadatta Track is leaving Marree to the west and crosses several tributaries of Lake Eyre South and the Dingo Fence. In Bopeechee hits from the south with the Borefield Road, another track on the road. On the south shore of Lake Eyre South along the road runs westwards to Wabma Kadarbu Mound Springs Conservation Park, where it swings to the northwest. In William Creek branches off to the west, the William Creek Road and about 200 km in the Oodnadatta the Kempe Road. Both roads lead to the Stuart Highway ( NA87 ) to Coober Pedy. In the Oodnadatta track leaves the former route of the Old Ghan, which further leads to the northwest, while the Oodnadatta track turns to the west and Marla also meets the Stuart Highway.

Road conditions and gas stations

In dry weather, the route is passable for most vehicles. Gas stations there are in Maree, William Creek, Oodnadatta and Marla.

Land Art

Not far from the tracks, around 60 km from Marree, there is the 4.2 -kilometer Marree Man, probably the largest land art as geoglyph, a Geoglyph.
