Oodweyne

Region

Oodweyne ( Somali: Codweyne, also Odweina, Odweine, Odweyne, Oodweeyne, Oodweyne Ōdwēyne or written ) is a town in the north of Somalia. The town is the administrative seat of the district of the same and has about 3,400 inhabitants.

Oodweyne lies in the region Togdheer, which is since the founding of the internationally unrecognized Somaliland claimed by this and also managed effectively.

Geography

The surrounding area is predominantly rural. The next population centers are Burao, the administrative center of the region about 57 km in the east and the capital Hargeysa Somaliands, about 125 km west of the neighboring region Woqooyi Galbeed.

Climate

History

Due to its strategic location, it was repeatedly theater of war during the Somali rebellion (1986-1992) against Siad Barre and served as a military base for troops of the Somali National Army ( SNA). In 1989 it came into the city fighting between government forces and militias of the Somali National Movement (SNM ). Landmines from this conflict make it difficult even today the transport of goods or the expansion of roads and trails in the region.
