Oostelijke Eilanden

The Oostelijke islands ( " eastern islands" ) are now a residential area in Amsterdam ( province of Noord-Holland ) and are located near the IJ. The islands had in 2009, along with Kadijken, 12,780 inhabitants.

History

In 1650 the islands Oostelijke Kattenburg, Oostenburg and Wittenburg were created. The artificial islands were a port area along with Uilenburg, Valkenburg and Rapenburg. The Verenigde Oost -Indische Compagnie (VOC ) and the Admiralty of Amsterdam had built their ships here. Here also worked Tsar Peter I.. , The canal belt was extended by the Oostelijke islands and islets Westelijke and so a ring created to Amsterdam city center. Here, a special task each new islands had each been allocated: Kattenburg should the Admiralty, Oostenburg serve the VOC and Wittenburg private shipyards. The latter was named after the owner of the first shipyard in this island: Jan Witheijn. To the east, behind the rampart, the still existing today Reeperbahnen the shipyards are located.

The Oostelijke islands include the Katte, Wittenburg and Oostenburg district. In 1953, after Katte castle had become over time to a slum ( Krottenwijk, by Krot derogatory for hole ), a reconstruction of the district. After 1800 Oostenburg was an area for the steel industry.

In Wittenburg is the historic church Oosterkerk. In Oostenburg the Indian Pakhuis Oost (East Indian storehouse ) of the former VOC and Kattenburg the Het National Maritime Museum ( Maritime Museum ).

1884 were given the islands a horse-drawn tram ( Paarde ( tram) lijn ). 1906, the first electric streetcar (tram ) with the No. 13 This was replaced in 1938 by the bus line 19, in Kattenburg drove 1913-1931 the " Tram " No. 18 Since 2005 the tram No. 26 after Kattenburg.
