Oosterhout

Oosterhout ( listen? / I ) is a municipality in the Netherlands, North Brabant, with 53 697 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). Their total area is about 73 km ².

The municipality includes the city of Oosterhout and the villages Den Hout, Dorst and Oosteind.

Location and economic

Oosterhout is located about 8 km north of the city center of Breda ( regular bus service ) on the highway Breda - Utrecht. The Wilhelminakanal connects it to Tilburg and the Amer (located at Geertruidenberg united with the " Bergse Maas " and flows in a westerly direction in the Hollands Diep ). In Oosterhout there are quite a lot of industry, including the candy factory Jamin, a central warehouse of EGLO Lights, a production facility for the processing of fruit Doehler GmbH and many small businesses.

History

Oosterhout was first documented in 1213. The Lord of Strijen, which was very important to the area, let build a castle here in 1288. Willem van Duvenvoorde (* 1290, † 1353 in Brussels ), bought this castle 1324. He was very rich and acquired dominion over the whole area around Breda and Bergen op Zoom ( the glory Oosterhout ).

Between 1300 and 1800 several noble families were here mansions, called Slotjes to German: build castle. In 1625, as Breda was besieged by Frederick Henry, Oosterhout suffered severe war damage.
