Open Knowledge Foundation

The Open Knowledge Foundation ( OKF short, German Foundation for open knowledge ) is a foundation that was established as a nonprofit organization on 24 May 2004 in Cambridge, UK. The Foundation has published the Open Definition and leads several projects, such as CKAN, a registry software, which used many governments for their open data projects, and Where Does My Money Go, a service for the transparent representation of household expenditure in the UK. In addition to the development of technical tools, the Foundation advises on licensing issues and is committed to free content. It has, for example, supports the development of the Open Database License (ODbL ) and the Open Knowledge Definition.

In Germany, the club Open Knowledge Foundation Germany eV is a German branch (English Chapter) of the Open Knowledge Foundation ( OKF ) present.

Objectives

When targets are the Open Knowledge Foundation to:

  • Create tools to assist the above objectives
  • To strengthen user freedom in terms of knowledge and data

Projects

OpenSpending

The Open Knowledge Foundation runs the site OpenSpending.org. Slogan of the site is "Mapping the money." Goal of the project is to capture every financial transaction of a government worldwide, making the accessible to users in catchy presentations. For Germany to date (22 October 2013) 38 datasets are available: in addition to diagrams of the federal budget and dynamic graphics of the accounts of individual cities and municipalities, among others, can be retrieved.
