Open Scripture Information Standard

OSIS (Open Scripture Information Standard ( Open Scripture Information Standard) ) is an XML application ( or schema ), the elements defined for structured information, mostly Bibles, theological comments and related literature, with texts here are gegeliedert hierarchy of books, chapters, verses.

OSIS schema was developed by the Bible Technologies Group, a committee sponsored by the American Bible Society and the Society of Biblical Literature. Participated in the drafting standard have the United Bible Societies, the Summer Institute of Linguistics, and various national Bible societies to continue voluntary staff. Latest version is 2.1.1 OSIS of 6 March 2006.

The scheme is very similar to the Text Encoding Initiative, although on the one hand much easier to extend ( by eliminating many unnecessary constructs ), and on the other side by the addition of much more detailed metadata, and a formal canonical reference system to books, chapters to identify, verses and certain positions in each verse.

The metadata contains a "Work Declaration" for the work itself, and for any work that it references. A Work Declaration provides basic catalog information based on the Dublin Core standard, and a local nickname for the work (similar to the XML namespace).

Special attention is devoted OSIS of encoding overlapping Awards. In Bibles comes this problem frequently because, for example, Sense sections often do not adhere to chapter and Versgrenzen.

An example with nested quotes (Jeremiah 2:1):

1 And the word of the LORD came to me:

4 Hear the word of the LORD ...

The difficulty is that verse 3 starts in the middle of the third level of nested quotes. In the normal text hierarchy, the quotation with verse 2 ends, and with verse 3 would have the quote start over. It is also important to note in the code that verse 3 starts on the third quote level.

This problem can be solved with the help of splitID attributes:

And the word of the LORD came unto me, < / verse >             Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying,          Thus saith the LORD;          I remember            the loyalty of your youth and the love of your espousals,            how you followed me in the wilderness, in the land where you do not sow.                      < / verse >                             Since Israel was holy to the Lord, the first fruits of his harvest.          Who would want to eat it, was guilty, and disaster had come upon him,          < - True Close Q Jer.2.2 C ->          saith the LORD.                 < - NO True Close Q Jer.2.2 - A ->      < / verse >    ...
