OpenACS

The Open Architecture Community System ( OpenACS ) is a suite of Web -based free software, designed for the creation and operation of extensive Web sites. It is licensed under the GNU GPL.

The Open Architecture Community System offers:

  • A large stock of applications that can be used for the development of websites, who value collaboration of users. The range of web presence is hereby developable large, ranging from online game servers ( with payment function ) over intranets of clubs to learning management systems and project management software.
  • A comprehensive toolkit for developing applications, which will enable a large set of programming interfaces and services, the rapid development of new applications. Features include a system of rights and common object model across all applications, integrated translation and test tools, simplified Ajax programming, a tool for easily creating lists and input masks, managing multiple web properties in an installation ( subsites / multi-tenancy ) and a powerful online application administrator.

OpenACS runs on the web server AOLserver with either Oracle or PostgreSQL as the database.

Projects based on OpenACS are, for example DotLRN, dotFolio and project-open.

Side note: OpenACS was originally parallel to ArsDigita Community System (ACS ) developed a product ArsDigita Corporation. 2002, after a code elimination, the Tcl source code passed into the maintenance of the OpenACS project.
