The name comes from the Sun CSW staff Alan DuBoff and was found after a discussion on comp.unix.solaris. Then in 2002 Philip Brown has taken the initiative to hunt for maintainers of packages that were then hosted at Blastwave.

In August 2008, escalated a dispute between the owner of the brand name " Blast Wave" Dennis Clarke and Philip Brown in consequence Clarke put all visible to the outside data of the project. As a result, was founded by a majority of the active maintainer OpenCSW and continued as a Fork. With the closure of Blast Wave in September 2012 CSW packages are offered only by OpenCSW.
