OpenEXR

OpenEXR is an HDR image file format that was similar to published as an open format by the U.S. company Industrial Light and Magic ILM under an open source license, the BSD license. ILM has specified this format and files for a development environment ( IDE) ready. Herein, a viewer for viewing OpenEXR images are included as well as a library of programs, with which one can handle this format in user-defined programs.

For storing image data OpenEXR uses a 16 -bit floating-point basis per color channel. This format is directly supported by the programming language CG. OpenEXR also supports 32 -bit floating point and 32 -bit integer data per pixel; these formats are provided for the storage of specific data, such as those with low information or object identifiers.

The lossless image compression of graphics data is supported, appropriate codecs are included in the IDE. The extensibility of the file format on such as vector graphics or any other compression algorithms are planned.
