OpenVAS

OpenVAS ( Open Vulnerability Assessment System) is a software framework for various services and tools and provides a solution for vulnerability scanning and vulnerability management.

The actual security scanner is supplemented by a daily updated feed service with so-called Network Vulnerability Tests ( NVT ). As of May 2013, this feed contains more than 30,000 plugins.

All OpenVAS components are free software. Most of them are licensed under the GPL.

The current stable version is 6.0, released in April 2013.

History

OpenVAS ( initially started as GNessUs, but then very soon renamed ) is a free security software.

OpenVAS was cleaved from Nessus, Nessus in 2005 moved to a proprietary license. To continue to have a free version, OpenVAS has since been further developed based on the last free version of Nessus. Version 1.0 was released in October 2007.

For a time, the official website was no longer accessible. Was followed by several releases of new versions. In addition, the website named on the list of projects of SPI.
