OpenWindows

OpenWindows was a desktop environment for workstations from Sun Microsystems. Open Windows was included in later versions of SunOS 4 and Solaris, before it was abandoned in favor of Solaris 9 CDE.

History

Open Windows 1.0 was published in 1989, first as optional accessory for SunOS 4.0 and then replace the older SunView. From 1990 OpenWindows 2.0 was included with SunOS 4.1.1.

Solaris 2.0, the successor to SunOS 4, shipped with OpenWindows 3.0.1, Solaris 2.3 (1993 ) with OpenWindows 3.3 and Solaris 7 with OpenWindows 3.6.1.

In 1993, Sun decided along with other major manufacturers of Unix-like operating systems in the context of the Open Group, with Common Desktop Environment to create a standardized work environment and therefore delivered with Solaris 8 from the last Open Windows version 3.6.2. Starting with the Solaris 9 Open Windows was no longer included and the development has been discontinued.
