Concept

Artistic Concept

Here, the term " opera" for a unifying art form that is emotional, political and social change qualities. With the Opera Village Africa to raise awareness of different cultures to be excited and also expand as a feedback to the European-influenced approach to art by learning from other cultures and be more direct. The artistic projects of the Opera Village Africa caused by the individuals who are committed to the opera village and they continue to develop in the process. As a community project, it is being driven by the people living there under to their needs and possibilities, new constellations arise, the Opera Village Africa is an independent organism. A symbolic image is formed the model of the snail shell. It stands for the slow growth of a large organism that takes an open, not vorauszubestimmenden way. Already in the development phase offers the Opera Village Africa a room, take place in the cultural encounters, workshops and exchanges.

Architecture concept

The architect of the opera village, Diébédo Francis Kéré, and Christoph Schlingensief agreed on the key issues that should accompany the construction of the opera village: What to expect and need the local people? What is there available for building materials?

Francis Kéré brings his knowledge of Europe, together with his knowledge of the situation and the people in Burkina Faso and forms the local workforce with the help of his employees from themselves so that they can deal with the resources that are available independently. Kéré has rehabilitated the use of natural materials such as clay, sand and stone on the ground and connects the traditional construction of his country with new environmental and sustainable concepts. Clay are available in plenty, but he was long regarded as "poor people - building material" and not baugerecht. People know from experience that a clay building a rainy season usually does not survive. That's why they strive for expensive and difficult to handle on-site construction materials such as cement. Kéré has now developed a technique to mix the clay so that it can withstand the rain - with minimal use of electricity and water and using only about 8 percent cement. These clay bricks can be produced locally, despite lack of electricity and water. So, people can build on site, the projects independently and then also wait for these and repair.

In this way is an organically functioning opera village with an autonomous ecological system arise, ensuring the sustainable management of natural resources. Francis Kéré has designed for the Opera Village Africa according to the local possibilities and needs special building modules that guarantee a long-term and multi-purpose usage. Its climate technology provides a constant, comfortable temperature without electricity.

With the support of numerous sponsors and friends from Europe and from Burkina Faso, these modules are now gradually being built by the local workers and, settled in the form of an ever-growing snail shell around the central square, where once the Festspielhaus is associated with fairground. In order to facilitate the progress of the construction work and better organize, Christoph Schlingensief and Francis Kéré have divided with her team from Europe and from Burkina Faso to build the opera village in three phases.

Construction phases

First construction phase (realized )

First, the modules were built, creating the important prerequisites for training and the independent discovery of their own possibilities. This includes especially the school with the appropriate teachers buildings, a recording studio for music class and a canteen and teachers houses. In addition, functional modules, such as a site office, workshops, offices and warehouse for building materials have been established to ensure that the infrastructure for the progress of the construction work is guaranteed. The Opera Village Africa was connected to the public electricity and water network in September 2011. The first phase was thus completed in October 2011, and the commissioning of the school took place on 8 October 2011.

Second construction phase (partially implemented )

The second phase began in April 2012 with the construction of the hospital ward, consisting of an initial medical care, a maternity ward and a dental station. The construction works were carried out in collaboration with the Green Helmets V. Thus, the opera village in the long run can take care of herself, is an alternative energy supply by solar system for the infirmary in planning and will be installed in March 2013. The commissioning of the infirmary is targeted for April 2013. Completed also has a football pitch. A children's playground is 2013 arise. In addition, this construction more living quarters for staff and a school extension will be created.

Third phase (planned)

Focus of the third construction phase is the construction of a cultural venue ( Festspielhaus ) in the middle of the site, this is the heart of the project. The Opera Village Africa is conceived as a place of art and life united. The ' Festspielhaus ' is therefore designed as a multifunctional building that is equally place of the meeting and of art, but can also serve as a marketplace or school auditorium.
