Operation Deep Freeze

Operation Deep Freeze is a set of operations by the U.S. Navy in Antarctica, starting in the 1955 season / 56th

Deep Freeze I took place in the years 1955 and 1956. The aim of this action was the establishment of the stations Little America V in Kainan Bay on the Ross Ice Shelf and McMurdo at McMurdo Sound on the Ross Island ) and the associated airfield ( William Air Operations Facility).

A year later, should be established by the Operation Deep Freeze II four new American IGY stations: the Amundsen -Scott South Pole on the ( facility by aircraft), Byrd in Marie Byrd Land, Wilkes at the Knox Coast and Ellsworth on the Filchner - Ronne Ice Shelf.

1957-1958 found Deep Freeze III held that the Antarctic crossings of Little America ( Ross Ice Shelf Traverse, AP Crary ), Byrd ( Sentinel Traverse, V. Anderson) and Ellsworth ( Filchner Ice Shelf traverse, ET Thiel ) should support.

With Deep Freeze IV (1958/1959) further crossings should be supported. The stations Little America, Wilkes and Ellsworth were abandoned. Since 1960, the following Deep Freeze operations are named after the year in which they take place.
