OPIE user interface

Open Palmtop Integrated Environment ( OPIE ) is a free graphical user environment for PDAs based on the GNU / Linux operating system. It uses widely used standards such as XML, OBEX and IrDA. Since 4 August 2003, the version 1.0 is available for Sharp Zaurus, Siemens SIMpad and HP iPAQ in multiple languages. Using Themes and Styles the surface can be adjust to your personal tastes.

Here are also applications for:

• Document Management
• Internet: IRC - client and Web browser Konqueror
• Multimedia: opieplayer2 can display images and dominates the streaming of audio and video data and is based on xine
• Network: Data comparison with Kolab, Outlook and the Qtopia Desktop
• Office: PDF viewer, PalmDoc reader
• The personal information manager (PIM ) includes address book, task list, notepad, email, organizer, text editor and search. It is also possible to communicate via Bluetooth, IrDA or network with Palm OS PDA or Pocket PC.
• News of the Day: In an overview of the current tasks, stock quotes, emails, birthdays, weather reports and dates are displayed.
• Plugins: enable, for example, handwriting recognition, keyboard input ...

OPIE supports many devices and provides binary compatibility with Zaurus applications. For access to the operating system itself, there is a Linux shell and advanced security features by Linux Security Services.

Originally OPIE based on Qtopia from Trolltech, although it was not developed further in some places.
