Opmeer

Opmeer ( listen / i?) ( West Frisian: Opmar or Obmar ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of North Holland ( nl. Noord-Holland).

The municipality has 11,380 inhabitants ( 1 January 2013) on an area of ​​42.24 km ² (of which about 0.6 square kilometers inland water). It is practically at an altitude of 0 meters above sea level.

Places

Opmeer consists of the villages of Hoogwoud, Spanbroek and Opmeer (where the Town Hall stands ); these three villages have grown together almost to a place. Still further include the small, consisting of a long series of farms and houses and places Aartswoud De Weere to the municipality Opmeer.

History

In the Middle Ages the area was long disputed between the Frisians and the Count of Holland. On January 28, 1256 was the German king and count of Holland William of Holland on a campaign against the West Frisians, who live in the north of the current province North Holland. He broke it with his horse at Hoogwoud through the ice. The Frisians found him, did not recognize the king and slew him.

In the 17th century the tiny Aartswoud was for a time an important port, even for sea-going vessels.

Location and economic

The largest part of the municipal area is still used today for agriculture, mainly as grazing land for cows. Most residents work in the industry and services in neighboring towns as well as in Amsterdam about 35 km away.

The community is located along the national road N 241, a good 10 km northwest of the town of Hoorn, near the motorway exit Wognum on the A 7 and E 22, and 14 km northwest of the city of Alkmaar.

The nearest train station is just a few kilometers south -lying place Obdam; also there is a good bus service to the city of Hoorn. Some 40 kilometers to the south is the international Schiphol Airport.

Tourism and Culture

Although Opmeer ( the two windmills from the years 1645 and 1650 and a beautiful church has ) only a few kilometers away from both the North Sea coast with the well known resorts Bergen and Egmond and the IJsselmeer in the east, the town is touristy yet to be discovered and is therefore, as a " tip" for a quiet vacation near the coast.

In addition Opmeer has the significant shear Inga Museum voor Realisme. This museum came from the private collection of businessman Dirk shear Inga (known as the sponsor of the football club AZ Alkmaar and sponsor of the Speed ​​Skating Sports). It displays paintings from the period between about 1918 and 1960, but also realistic embossed works of more modern masters. Especially Carel Willink and other Dutch artists of the New Objectivity and Magic Realism are represented. But works by Gustave van de Woestijne and René Magritte in Belgium, Giorgio de Chirico (Italy ) as described by Anton Räderscheidt and Georg Schrimpf included in the collection. The museum will move in early 2010 by Spanbroek into a larger building in Opmeer, and his previously closed some time. The name is then in Shear Inga Museum change.

In Hoogwoud a Tram Hotel was established. In two old trams from Germany four apartments are available.
