Optode

Glucose optrode is a biochemical sensor for determining the concentration of glucose in a solution.

Principle

The glucose Optrode is part of a dialysis hollow fiber. Through this hollow fiber fluorescein is excited in a portion of the measuring volume to fluorescence.

In the non-energized portion of the measuring volume are attached to the binding protein Con A, dextran fluorescein molecules. In the measuring volume can penetrate through a membrane glucose. Glucose now competes with the dextran to the courts to the binding protein. It represents an equilibrium, since dextran and glucose equally well bind to the binding protein. In the excited area of the sample solution thus contains the same amount of glucose and dextran. The enzyme bound to the dextran fluorescein fluoresces. The brightness is proportional to the glucose concentration.
