Opuntia chlorotica is a flowering plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The specific epithet chlorotica means green colored '. English common names are " Clock Face Prickly Pear ", " Flapjack Prickly Pear " and " Pancake Prickly Pear ".

Description

Opuntia chlorotica growing shrubby to tree-like and reaches stature heights of 1 to 2 meters. The often highly skilled core is thorny, up to 30 inches long and has a diameter of up to 20 centimeters. The round to broadly elongate drive sections are blue-green to greenish yellow. They are 15 to 20 inches long, 12 to 18 inches wide and 1 to 2 inches thick. The pfriemlichen leaves are up to 6 millimeters long. Up to 2 inches apart standing areoles bear numerous yellow, not falling glochids of up to 4.5 millimeters in length. The 1-7 pale yellow spines are usually 2.5 to 4 inches long. You are subulate, recurved, erect or curved.

The bright yellow flowers are tinted reddish, 5-8 inches long and have diameters of 4-6 centimeters. The fleshy, almost spherical to ellipsoidal fruits are tinged with greyish and reddish. They are 4-6 inches long and have a diameter of 2 to 3.5 centimeters.

Systematics and distribution

Opuntia chlorotica is common in the U.S. states of California, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico, and the Mexican states of Baja California and Sonora.

The first description was published in 1856 by George Engelmann and John Milton Bigelow. A synonym is Opuntia palmeri.
