Opuntia pinkavae is a flowering plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The epithet of the species honors the American botanist John Pijia Donald (* 1933).

Description

Opuntia pinkavae growing shrubby with outstretched to the ascending branches and plant height reaches 10 to 25 centimeters. The narrow to broadly ovate, flat and firmly connected to each drive sections are glabrous or slightly downy. They are 6.5 inches long and 3 to 11 inches wide. The 1.5 to 2 inches apart areoles bear standing at the top of showy, dense glochids 2-4 millimeters in length. The 1-4 yellowish gray to whitish gray spines arise from the upper areoles. You are pointing down to an upright position and 3.5 to 7 inches long. Sometimes even smaller spines are present.

The magenta -red to pink flowers are 4.5 to 7.5 inches long. The dry fruits reach a diameter of 2 to 2.5 cm.

Systematics and distribution

Opuntia pinkavae is distributed in the United States in northern Arizona and southern Utah. The first description was published in 1997 by Bruce Dale Parfitt.
