Oraison

Oraison is a commune with 5484 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Alpes- de -Haute -Provence, Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Oraison lies between the Luberon and Verdon Gorge in the Durance valley.

Attractions

The Castle

Around 1720 the family Fulque built a castle in the Renaissance style. In 1772 it was destroyed during the French Revolution and rebuilt with an additional floor. Louis Pasteur remained some time on here.

Channel

It is also known a hydroelectric power plant supplying Canal d' Oraison who uses the water of the Durance and was built in the years 1959 to 1962.

  • In Oraison Jean Marc Gaspard Itard was (* April 24, 1774; † July 5, 1838 in Paris), a French physician and teacher born deaf.
