Oran Milo Roberts

Oran Milo Roberts ( born July 9, 1815 Laurens District, South Carolina, † May 19, 1898 in Austin, Texas) was an American lawyer and the 18th Governor of Texas.

Roberts was born the son of Obe and Margaret Roberts in South Carolina. He received his education at home by private tutors. At the age of 17, he began his law studies at the University of Alabama, graduated four years later and was admitted as a lawyer in 1837. In 1841 he moved to San Augustine, Texas, where he settled with their own law firm. 1844 Roberts was appointed by the then President of Texas, Sam Houston district attorney. Two years later he became a district judge. He also taught at the University of San Augustine. In 1856 he was elected to the Supreme Court of Texas. During this time he became the spokesman for state rights and a 1860 discussion about the secession reached its peak, he was the center of the voting for the Confederate fraction. In 1862 he went back to East Texas, where he helped set up the 11th Infantry Regiment, but his military career was short. In 1864 he was elected Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas.

Even the American Civil War he was in 1866 elected U.S. Senator. In 1868 he went back to Gilmer, where he opened a school for aspiring lawyers. With the return of the Democrats to power in 1874 in Austin Roberts was elected to the Supreme Court and served as chief judge for the next four years. In 1879 he was elected to succeed Richard B. Hubbard for governor of Texas. His main concerns were to reduce the high taxes, the improvement of the state budget and a nationwide network of public schools. To finance his projects he had to sell state-owned land and carried out and in 1882 the foundation stone for the University of Texas at Austin has been placed, the its doors in 1883, just before the official end of Roberts, opened a financial reform. His successor as governor was John Ireland.

After his post at the end as Governor Roberts worked for the next few years as a professor of law at the newly founded university. During his time at the university he published several reference books. The most famous of this is The Elements of Texas Pleading, which was published in 1890. In 1893 he left the university and moved to Marble Falls, where he wrote more historically important writings. In 1895 he moved back to Austin, where he died on 19 May 1898.
