Orange County (Indiana)

Orange County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Paoli.

Geography

The County is located in southern Indiana, is about 60 km from Kentucky and has an area of 1057 square kilometers, of which 22 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lawrence County, Washington County, Crawford County, Dubois County and Martin County.

History

Orange County was formed on December 26, 1815 from parts of Gibson County, Knox County and Washington County. It was named after the eponymous County in North Carolina.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Orange County, 19,306 people in 7,621 households and 5,342 families. The population density was 18.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.90 percent White, 0.63 percent African American, 0.31 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.25 percent from other races groups; 0.73 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.56 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 7,621 households out of which 32.4 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 57.6 percent were married couples living together, 8.6 percent were single mothers and 29.9 percent were non-families. 26.2 percent of all households and 12.0 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.00.

25.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.0 percent between 18 to 24, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44 years. 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 94.7 males.

The median income for a household in the 31 564 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family $ 38,505. Males have a median income of $ 28,658, women $ 20,238. The per capita income was $ 16,717. 9.0 percent of families and 12.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
