Orange County (Vermont)

Orange County is a county located in the state of Vermont in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Chelsea.

Geography

The County is bordered on the east by New Hampshire and has an area of 1792 square kilometers, of which 8 square miles is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Caledonia County, Grafton County ( New Hampshire), Windsor County, Addison County and Washington County.

History

Orange County was formed in February 1781 from parts of the then defunct Cumberland County.

  • In Strafford is the historic Justin Smith Morrill Homestead. The estate of U.S. Senator from Vermont Justin Smith Morrill was taken in 1966 by the National Register of Historic Places.

Demographic data

1900-1990

According to the census of 2000, there were 28 226 people in the county. There were 10,936 households, and 7,611 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.02 % White, 0.24 % African American, 0.27 % Native American, 0.35 % Asian, 0.04 % Pacific Islander residents from the 0.13 % percent from other ethnic groups; 0.95% were descended from two or more races. 0.58 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 10,936 households out of which 33.40 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.10 % were married couples living together, 8.90% had a female householder with no husband. 30.40% were non-families. 23.40% of all households and 9.20 % had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.97.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 25.60 % under the age of 18, 7.80 % from 18 to 24, 28.20 % from 25 to 44 years, 25.60 % between 45 and 64 years and 12.80% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 99.20 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.60 males.

The median income for a household was $ 39,855, and the median income for a family was $ 45,771. Males have a median income of $ 30,679, women $ 24,144. The per capita income was $ 18,784. 9.10% of the population and 6.10% of families are below the poverty line. 11.40% of those under age 18 and 8.80% were 65 years or older.

Cities and Towns

In addition to those listed below, there are independent municipalities in Orange County three villages, but which are managed by the parent town: Newbury Post Mills and Wells River.
