Oranjestad is the capital of belonging to the Dutch Kingdom Caribbean island of Aruba. It is equipped with 33,000 inhabitants ( 2005) also the largest city of the island.

History

Already in 1796 the Fort Zoutman was founded by the Dutch. Shortly thereafter, the first houses were built in this area. Since then, Oranjestad is the capital of Aruba. 1986 won Oranjestad something more important, as it has now capital of one of three equal parts of the Dutch kingdom ( along with the Netherlands and the Netherlands Antilles ).

Infrastructure

Oranjestad is connected via the Queen Beatrix International Airport with many countries in the Caribbean, the United States and Europe. There is also a port, which is driven by many cruise ships. Since 2013 there is a tram that connects the port with the center.

The main attractions in Oranjestad are the Fort Zoutman, the Willem III. Tower, the schooner harbor with many duty -free shops and different ways to play sports and the Wilhelminastraat, a very varied shopping street.

Architecture

The city is also known for its unique architecture (mainly in the old town ). It can be seen at first sight the Dutch influence on the colorful, ornate, airy and tall buildings. The entire old town exudes a Dutch Caribbean flair.
