Oratorio di San Rocco (Siena)

The church Oratorio di San Rocco in Siena ( also Oratorio di San Rocco alla Lupa called ) is the hl. Dedicated to St. Roch ( feast day August 16 ).

Location

The church is located within the city walls in Via Vallerozzi 63 (facade ). The back is adjacent to the Via Pian d' Ovile. Both roads are in the city thirds Terzo di Camollia in Contrada Lupa ( she-wolf ), whose Kontradenkirche it is. The complex of buildings includes the crypt, which is now used as Kontradenmuseum and was restored in 2002 and the cappellone ( chapel ).

History

The building was built around the year 1511, as described in a report of Sigismondo Tizio from the same year. From 1526 began the decorations of the interior by Senese artists. For this, the Compagnia di San Rocco laicale founded the Circle Tavola del Crucifix, which was attended among others Bernardino Capitelli, Ilario Casolani, Giovan Paolo Pisani, Simondio Salimbeni and Niccolò Tornioli. Among the most important artworks of the church is the fresco cycle Storie di San Rocco Crescenzio Gambarelli and Rutilio Manetti, who was born 1605-1610 in the adjoining building cappellone di San Rocco. Was completed in the Oratory 1530-1540. Since the start of construction at which participated the Contrada, the place was used as a church and as Contradensitz. First differences between the Church and the Contrada originated around 1740, when the Contrada the cappellone should no longer use. The disputes were laid down on 8 August 1743 and is the contrada allowed to use the premises, but against a compensation of 12 scudi and 7 lira and the symbolic contribution of three white candles decorated each year.
