Orava Castle

The Orava Castle, Castle Orava Castle Orava or ( Slovak Orava hrad, Hungarian Árva Vára ) is a fortress located in the region of Orava, Slovakia.

Location

The medieval castle is situated on a steep rock cliff 112 feet above the water surface of the Orava river (520 meters above sea level ), 10 kilometers northeast of Dolny Kubin.

History

The castle was built gradually from the 13th to the 17th century, the buildings were built on three terraces of the rock.

It is the burial place of George Thurzos († 1616), Palatine of Hungary.

She was until the end of the magnate conspiracy in the possession of Thokoly family, Emmerich Thokoly father Stephan Thokoly died on November 23, 1670 in defense of his property against the Imperial Austrian troops.

Trivia

For the first famous vampire movie, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's Nosferatu - A Symphony of Horror, was in the summer of 1921, exterior and interior shots of the castle and its surroundings used to represent the castle of the vampire Count Orlok.

In the based on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski PC game " The Witcher " the Orava Castle was the inspiration for subscribers on the castle Kaer Morhen, home of the sorcerer.

General

For the largest and also the oldest part of the castle lead 800 steps. The rooms accommodate historic interiors, in a part of the castle there is a museum with over 13,000 exhibits. With the commanding view of the river and the surrounding mountain ranges, the castle is known as one of the most beautiful castles in Slovakia.
