Orazio Torsellino

Horatio Torsellini (Latin Horatius Tursellinus; * 1545 in Rome, † 1599 in Florence ) was an Italian scholar and writer of humanism.

Life

As the son of a fishmonger Torsellini grew up in the Roman district of Campo Marzio. He was devout, educated, which coined his works, was an outstanding teacher in the Jesuit Order. He has written books on usual for that time religious themes. Innovative was his didactic inspired historiography. He wanted to give summaries ( Epitome ) of the main events from Adam to 1598 in ten books. The last event mentioned before the termination because of his death is the peace of Vervins between France and Spain. In 1599 he died in Florence from tuberculosis.

His works have been repeatedly postponed and continued new over time. They appeared in Latin, Italian and French.
